MOVE OF THE WEEK: Curtsey Lunge Tricep Extension. If you’ve been working out with me, you probably know by now that I love this variation of lunge. Also…who doesn’t love to curtsey? It’s effective and really hits a lot of muscles. The curtsy lunge works your glutes, tones your inner and outer thighs, and strengthens your calve muscles. It also challenges balance, and therefore your core. Throw in a tricep extension and you’ve got yourself an incredibly effective and efficient full body move! Have fun with it! (Note: video is sped up). Technique:

1) Begin standing with your feet hip width apart, arms at your sides.
2) Keeping your weight in your left food, take a big step back with your right leg, crossing it behind your left leg (as if about to curtsey).
3) Bend your knees and lower your body straight down until your front thigh is parallel to the floor, and both knees are bent at 90 degrees.
4) Begin your tricep extension at this bottom position and be sure to keep your elbows in close to your head through the entire movement.
5) Be sure to keep your abs tight and your back straight, chest up.
6) Holding your abs drawn in, return to the starting standing position, as you straighten your arms overhead, squeezing the triceps and keeping the arms and elbows tight to your ears. That’s one rep. Perform 12-15 reps before switching to the other side.

Tips: 
1) The movement can feel a little strange at first, so practice without weight until you feel comfortable.
2) As you lunge, keep your front knee right over your ankle and don’t let it go past your toes. Do not let your ankle roll in or out and keep your toes pointed straight ahead.
3) If it's difficult to balance, omit the tricep extension and use a wall for stability. Move away from the wall as your stability increases.

MOVE OF THE WEEK: Curtsey Lunge Tricep Extension. If you’ve been working out with me, you probably know by now that I love this variation of lunge. Also…who doesn’t love to curtsey? It’s effective and really hits a lot of muscles. The curtsy lunge works your glutes, tones your inner and outer thighs, and strengthens your calve muscles. This is the sixth workout in my Lean Body Series. Yay, for those of you who have made it this far! Awesome job!

One round of this workout is 16 minutes of pure Tabata torture! Tabata intervals are 20/10 (20 seconds at your max intensity and 10 seconds of full rest). A good way to gauge your intensity level is to determine if you can still move around during those 10 seconds of rest. If you can, then you need to go harder on the 20 second intervals and make sure you take each 10 second rest period fully. Dr. Tabata developed and tested this protocol and it's super effective. Listen to your body though, if you need to lower your intensity please do so and feel good that you are working hard for your health and fitness. Be proud of your efforts! :-) You rock!

This is the sixth workout in my Lean Body Series. Yay, for those of you who have made it this far! Awesome job!

Move of the Week: Sculpt tight abs with the Twisted Knee Tuck! For strong and defined abs you need to extend, flex, and rotate, and this move does all of these. To SEE those strong abs, you’ve got to reduce fat and this move will help with that since it uses more muscles than just the abdominals, therefore burning more calories. It even gives you a bit of an upper body and lower body workout. Score! Throw 3 sets of 12 reps of these bad boys into your next workout.

Technique:

1) Begin in a full plank position, feet on gliders. If you don’t have gliders, you can use 2 small towels (hard surface) or paper/plastic plates (carpeted surface).
2) Ensure that your hands are lined up under your shoulders and your core is engaged. 
3) Rotate your hips to the left, keeping your legs together and in a fluid motion press the balls of your feet into the floor as you pull both knees toward your left elbow. Hold for 2 counts.
4) Continuing to press down with the balls of your feet, return back to plank position. Repeat on the right side. That’s one rep.

Tips: 
1) Pushing the balls of your feet into the floor creates more resistance and engages the core more, which increases the intensity and effectiveness of the move.
2) Try doing this move with your feet up on a Swiss ball!
